Governor of Connecticut commemorates Nov. 1st as the 1984 Sikh Genocide Remembrance Day in the State Capitol.
The World Sikh Parliament commemorates the 36th anniversary of the 1984 Sikh Genocide by India.
7th Nov 2020, Stamford Connecticut: The 2018 Bill introduced by State Senator Cathy Osten and State Representative Kevin Ryan and signed by Governor Dan Malloy passed unanimously, commemorating every year, Nov 1st, as a Sikh Genocide Remembrance Day.
Connecticut Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz read Governor Ned Lamont’s proclamation on this day and showed empathy with the Sikh community. State Senator Cathy Osten, State Representative Kevin Ryan, expressed their remarks and read a citation from the Connecticut General Assembly, recognizing the 1984 Sikh Genocide committed by the Indian Government. The World Sikh Parliament was recognized for its humanitarian work along with their partners during Covid-19 in America.
Senator Osten emphasized, “Nations that commit genocide are to be made accountable. Sikhs must commemorate such days, every year.”
Peter Nystrom, Mayor of Norwich, gave his remarks recognizing the anti-Sikh killings in 1984 as a Sikh Genocide.
In solidarity with the Sikh Nation, Attorney General of Connecticut William Tong sent his official statement on the 36th anniversary commemorating the Sikh Genocide,
Senate Majority leader Bob Duff, State Senator Saud Anwar, State Representative Emmett Riley, Jillian Gilchrest, Lucy Dathan, and Josh Elliott also expressed their solidarity.
Swaranjit Singh Khalsa Member Board of Education of Norwich and Coordinator for UN-NGO Council for World Sikh Parliament, said, “I am thankful to the Sikhs of Connecticut and other members in organizing this event at State Capitol. It took us three months to prepare and plan for this event.

Himmat Singh, Coordinator of the World Sikh Parliament, read Jathedar Jagtar Singh Hawara’s message and thanked everyone for joining the event.
Members of the local Tamil community, Interfaith leaders, local Connecticut Sikh organizations, community leaders from other Sikh organizations, and gurdwaras were also part of the commemoration.
